Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Perrinton, Michigan. Our expertise lies in hair drug and alcohol testing, with testing centers located nationwide that can conduct such tests. Generally, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, the implementation of hair follicle drug testing is on the rise. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly choosing hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for those with strict no-drug policies, individuals on probation, or as mandated by courts. Hair tests boast a longer detection window—up to 90 days—and are difficult to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a formidable approach for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month detection tenure for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch portion, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we imply scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This process entails verifying the sample's sealing and shipping integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers an economical method for excluding drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen necessitates verification to be valid in a legal context. Screening results that are presumptively positive demand a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase entails extracting drugs from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the high complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entirety of the laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, compared to the shorter detection span of urine screenings.
  • Resistance to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle within the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
