In Plymouth Township, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, our specialty lies in this exact method. We boast testing venues across all U.S. cities capable of conducting hair analyses. Typically, tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Results cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair evaluations.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent standard for drug screening. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug testing over conventional urine analysis. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probationers often use this method due to its extended detection period—up to 90 days—difficult to manipulate, and observed sample collection. Urine tests remain the most precise for detecting use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The assessment of hair samples is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate a long-term record of these substances by incorporating biomarkers within their growing fibers. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can reveal usage history for up to a three-month period for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch length of around 200 hair strands (roughly comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) found closest to the scalp yields a sample size of 100mg, which is optimal for scrutiny and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair signifies all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Processing Overview

Drug test results pass through four key laboratory steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase pertains to the initial sample intake into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fills any missing data not captured by an electronic custody system.

Screening is an expedient preliminary check for drug presence. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive findings must undergo confirmation for legal validity. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional verification.

For samples flagged during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at more reduced concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Any positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before Confirming as warranted. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair compliance and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses capture substance use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have shorter periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably hard, resulting in more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Chronic use insights: Hair analysis can reveal a timeline of drug consumption, rather than just recent activities.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to spot recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis tends to be pricier than alternative testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests," the focus is on the hair strand, not the follicle residing beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
