Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Portland, Michigan. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair assessments, with testing centers available Nationwide capable of conducting a hair examination. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown of your head or body for most tests. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing criteria.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of drug screening methods. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing serves employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The major advantage is its extended detection timeframe for drug use, lasting up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making deception difficult. However, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting substance use. Hair strands capture long-term data on alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within their fibers. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a history of up to three months of alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both initial screening and detailed confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional elements, and/or more than 10-panel assessments, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen weight. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The complete laboratory process for evaluating a drug test sample includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into the lab's system. This phase ensures the sample's integrity, assigns a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizes any missing data entries not covered by electronic custody chains.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective means to assess most samples, any positive findings require further confirmation to stand up legally. Presumably positive samples discovered during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

When Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the provided sample for further preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, substances are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair analysis the most complex testing methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results utilizes technologies like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation as required. The entire workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Decreased likelihood of falsification: Manipulating results in a hair test is remarkably difficult, ensuring reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: These tests reveal trends in drug use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Hair takes around 5-7 days for substances to be traceable.
  • Expense: Hair analysis is usually costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal growth rates can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these analyses actually examine the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing in Portland, MI? The advantages over urine testing are significant. With hair tests, detection accuracy is enhanced, providing superior reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests detect drug use over a more extended period, offering a comprehensive assessment of an individual's potential substance history.

While urine tests might detect recent use, hair follicle testing's strength lies in its ability to uncover long-term patterns. Employers benefit from this method due to its enhanced detection capabilities, making it an invaluable tool for maintaining a drug-free work environment.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
