Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sheldon, Michigan. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with testing centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or body for testing. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and probation officers. Their key advantage lies in their extended detection capability, spanning up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making them nearly foolproof. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the fibers, hair offers a prolonged timeline of substance use. When sampled close to the scalp, it allows for a detection period of up to around three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch length comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is suggested to have 150mg of the specimen. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug testing results consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves incorporating a sample into a lab's system, which includes checking that the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input that isn't part of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any screenings that show presumptive positivity must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening confirmations are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • High difficulty to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more trustworthy results.
  • Historical usage data: Hair tests can reveal a timeline of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: There's a 5-7 day period before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier than alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
