In Stalwart, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug evaluations. Whether testing for drugs or alcohol, our centers, nationwide, are equipped for hair assessments. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are generally needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provides tailored options.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests are favored over urine tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often mandate hair tests due to their long detection capabilities, up to 90 days, and resistance to tampering. Hair tests benefit zero-tolerance policies and probation requirements. However, for drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential method for detecting drugs and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When extracted near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month period of detection for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising about 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for assessment and validation. For EtG and other specific tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair is insufficient, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (including facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results is comprised of four chief steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s workflow. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for potential drug presence. Screening serves as an economical method for discounting drug presence in most samples; however, a positive screening still necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any screenings yielding presumptive positives require further confirmation.

If a screening result indicates presumptive positivity, additional hair from the original sample is readied for Extraction. In the Extraction phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than found in other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complex nature of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS technologies. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as indicated. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use extending up to 90 days, whereas urine tests typically have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably hard, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the subcutaneous hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
