Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Union Lake, Michigan. If you require hair or alcohol testing, our specialization in hair-based tests means you can find testing centers nationwide, capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is sufficient. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common for drug testing. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts lean towards hair testing over urine tests. This method is used by companies with strict drug use policies, judicial systems, and probationary subjects. Hair tests provide a longer detection period, capturing drug use up to 90 days, with an observed collection that is hard to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a recognized method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fiber strands of the developing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can yield a detection timeframe of up to nearly 90 days for alcohol and substances. Hair is straightforward to acquire, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A collected section of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will amount to 100mg, which is the suitable quantity for evaluation and corroboration. For EtG, enhancements, or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing lab outcome processing comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step incorporates verifying the sample’s proper sealing and dispatch, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for substance misuse. While screening is a budget-friendly approach for excluding drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening must be validated for legal admissibility. All samples indicated presumptively positive during screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample registers presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), justifying why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation, if needed. The complete lab course from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can perceive drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection duration of urine assessments.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating on a hair drug assessment is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It establishes a trend in drug consumption over extended intervals, not confined to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incipient usage detection: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand instead of the underlying scalp follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Union Lake, MI, offers substantial advantages over traditional urine tests. Unlike urine analysis, hair tests have a significantly extended detection window, viewing drug usage deeply. This enhanced sensitivity ensures superior reliability and accuracy, essential for workplaces enforcing strict drug policies.

Urine tests provide limited detection, often failing to capture a broad substance history. Hair follicle tests, with their adeptness in identifying long-term usage, stand as an authoritative method. Their robustness and resistance to manipulation highlight their supremacy in a wide testing landscape.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Union Lake, MI, provides employers with an extended window of detection, capturing drug use for up to 90 days. This longevity offers a comprehensive insight into a candidate's or employee's substance use history, making it an invaluable tool for pre-employment and ongoing assessments.

The extended detection timeline surpasses that of other methods, offering a detailed chronology of drug use that can inform HR decisions with confidence. This extended outlook is crucial for maintaining and enforcing a coherent, drug-free work environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
