Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Waterford, Michigan. Specializing in hair testing, we provide tests in numerous cities across the Nation. For a successful test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, whether from the head or body. Our hair tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailor-made testing solutions.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly popular in recent years for drug testing. It is favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over standard urine tests. Employers with no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation benefit from hair testing's longer detection period of up to 90 days, its observed collection process, and its difficulty to manipulate. Nevertheless, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended timeline of substance use by incorporating chemical markers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection timeframe for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (about the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If head hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. In terms of head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The four primary phases in the laboratory handling of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This includes affirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any unresolved data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use on the bulk of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this point, substances are removed from hair at notably lower concentrations than in alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive undergo washing prior to verification as required. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can detect drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceptionally difficult to manipulate a hair drug analysis, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot capture recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
