Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Vernon, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and offers facilities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer a hair test over a urine test. Those organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers employ hair drug tests. Their advantage is a significantly extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making them nearly tamper-proof. However, for identifying drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests are still deemed most accurate.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands provide a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fiber of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a period extending up to roughly three months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, it's quite resistant to tampering, and shipping is convenient.

A sample that is 1.5 inches in length and consists of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a standard #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferable. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of sufficient scalp hair, a proportional amount of body hair may be acquired. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is composed of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within a laboratory’s system. This step involves verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data input that an electronic chain of custody system might not cover.

Screening consists of a preliminary quick analysis for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most cases, any positive screens necessitate validation to hold up in court. Samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

For any positive screening results, Confirmation is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation takes place as required. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers past usage insight: It can reflect a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests are often more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variances like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
