Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cedar Springs, Michigan. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol detection, we specialize in hair assessments, with facilities across all major cities nationwide. Hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches typically gathered from the crown or body, allows for drug, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method in drug screening. Many organizations, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine analysis. The advantages include a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, trustworthy collection procedures, and near-impossibility of fraudulent results. For drug activity within five days, however, urine tests remain the accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged record of substance exposure by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for about a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for both screening and validation. For EtG extensions, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This process involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid legally. Any Screening samples that show positive indications require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a positive indication during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that have a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Tampering with a hair drug test is very challenging, making the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It enables tracking a pattern of drug use over time, rather than capturing only current use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for substances to be evident in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Even though often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
