Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Village of Clarkston, Michigan. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in this service with facilities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted as a method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer it over urine tests. It's favored for zero-tolerance drug policies, court requirements, and probation monitoring. Its advantage is its ability to detect drug use up to 90 days, through an observed collection process and is difficult to tamper with. That said, urine tests retain accuracy for recent, within 5 days usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly become recognized as an effective way to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within its strands as they grow. When hair is gathered close to the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step where a sample is integrated into the laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any pending data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid initial evaluation for drugs of abuse. This cost-effective step allows for the elimination of drug use in most samples. Nonetheless, any positive results in Screening require confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples with preliminary positive results in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

Upon a preliminary positive result in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. This involves extracting drugs from hair in concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any samples with presumed positive results are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection durations.
  • Challenging to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronicles usage patterns: This test reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
