Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with locations in cities throughout the United States available to conduct such tests. Clients generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or, in some cases, from the body to proceed. These hair tests can detect substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific hair testing purposes.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug tests as a method for identifying substance use has increased in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are more frequently requiring hair drug tests rather than more conventional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug use policies, legal courts, and individuals under probation are among those who adopt hair follicle drug testing. A significant advantage of using hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection window for identifying drug use—up to 90 days—along with the method’s supervised collection process, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for drug use within the prior five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 strands (approximately matching the thickness of a #2 pencil) at the scalp can provide 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised for weighing the specimen. If head hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a laboratory involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. All samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), thus rendering hair drug screening one of the harder methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over a duration, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
