There are four critical stages in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Confirmation for any positive screen is done with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Any samples that test presumptively positive are washed before confirmation if required. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

The joint meeting of the Society of Hair Testing (SoHT) and the Italian Group of Forensic Toxicologists (GTFI) was organized in Verona, June 8–10, 2022, and hosted by the Legal Medicine team of the Verona University Hospital, directed by Franco Tagliaro together with Federica Bortolotti and Rossella Gottardo.
