Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Akeley, Minnesota. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities available in every city across the country for conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly integral in drug screening. Many organizations, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug use policies, legal authorities, and those on probation frequently rely on hair follicle testing. This method's primary advantage is its extended detection period for substance use, often up to 90 days, thanks to an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof. That said, urine tests maintain superiority for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means to identify the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a longer-duration record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair offers almost a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch length of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional metrics, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is insufficient, an equal measure of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (beard, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key phases in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the preliminary handling of a specimen into the lab’s framework. This ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry that an electronic chain of custody system omits.

Screening is an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples suggesting positivity in Screening must have secondary verification.

For samples suggesting positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and set for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging procedure to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcomes is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is appraised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and the approval to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair tests can ascertain drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection timeline.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, thus enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insight: It can provide a history of drug utilization over time, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis tends to be pricier compared to other drug test techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair-growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Remark: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
