Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Bejou, Minnesota. Whether you're seeking a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with centers nationwide offering this service. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is necessary. Hair testing can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

In recent times, drug testing methods more frequently incorporate hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This change is favored by those implementing strict drug policies. Hair follicle assessments provide an extended detection window, up to 90 days, are conducted under supervision, and are tailored to avoid tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use, within five days, urine testing remains highly reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers from alcohol and drugs, providing a historical overview of substance intake. Samples collected near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to three months. Hair samples are straightforward to gather, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) obtained close to the scalp will yield about 100mg of hair, suitable for testing. For EtG and additional panels exceeding 10, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used as a substitute. “Head hair” refers exclusively to scalp hair, while “body hair” encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory testing process consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is logged into the lab’s system, where its sealed condition is checked, a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and necessary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody is entered.

Screening comprises a rapid assessment to detect drugs of abuse. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug use in many samples, a positive result requires official confirmation for legality. Samples testing positive during Screening need an additional verification step.

Samples that test positive in Screening proceed to the Extraction stage, where additional hair from the initial sample is processed. Drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair analysis poses greater challenges.

Positive results are cross-verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, samples undergo washing if necessary. The overall laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes examination for compliance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks long-term patterns: It illustrates a timeline of drug consumption, rather than recent activity alone.

Limitations:

  • Does not show immediate use: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost factor: Hair tests typically incur greater expenses than alternative testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Variables such as hair color and personal growth differences can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the evaluation is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
