Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Brownsville, Minnesota. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, they specialize in hair analysis with centers in cities across the country that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other substances.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair testing over the standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, court orders, and probation requirements. The key advantage is the extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it hard to manipulate. However, for detection of recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases drug and alcohol biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strand, providing an extensive temporal record. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a period of up to three months. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch length containing roughly 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG specifics, specialized add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, an elevated specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a proportional quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair only, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, underarm).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any necessary supplemental data entry that might not be furnished by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exonerate most samples from drug use, any positive identification must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening proceed to an additional confirmation step.

In instances of presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial sample undergoes Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or saliva testing, making hair drug analysis among the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation occurs through advanced techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS, following a thorough cleansing of presumptive positive samples as required. The entire laboratory workflow is scrutinized under both the College of American Pathologists' Hair designation and accreditation per ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug ingestion for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair tests are notably difficult to falsify, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Tracks usage patterns: These tests can delineate drug consumption trends over time, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs take 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Higher costs: Hair testing typically incurs higher expenses compared to alternative methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair pigmentation and personal growth rates can influence metabolite concentration levels in hair.

Note: Despite the common reference as "hair follicle tests," these assessments evaluate the hair shaft rather than the follicle below the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
