Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Crow River, Minnesota. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities nationwide, including in every city, for conducting these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is generally required. Options include tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has increasingly complemented traditional drug testing methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle evaluations suit employers with rigorous drug use policies, judicial settings, and probation monitoring. Its key advantage lies in its extended drug detection capacity, encompassing up to 90 days, under monitored conditions, which is difficult to circumvent. For very recent drug use, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by capturing biomarkers in the hair's fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month period of drug and alcohol use. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four key stages in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system, confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not managed by an electronic custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While it's a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptively positive results in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Presumptive positive samples in Screening lead to further hair extraction from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter window.
  • High integrity: Cheating a hair drug test proves to be quite challenging, hence results are more reliable.
  • Chronological insight: Offers an overview of drug use patterns over time, rather than just immediate past usage.

Limitations:

  • Limited on recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Referred to sometimes as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
