Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Geneva, Minnesota. If you're required to take a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this area, with facilities available nationwide that can conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or body. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored to specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine analyses. This is especially true for workplaces with strict anti-drug policies, legal cases, and probation requirements. A major advantage of hair tests is their extensive 90-day detection window, alongside being nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. The fibers of the growing hair strand traps biomarkers, making hair a repository for a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar amount of body hair is an alternative. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for courtroom acceptance. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening mandate secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, an additional portion of hair from the initial sample is taken and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive screening result is verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more precise results.
  • Historical usage data: It can reveal a usage pattern over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
