In Hay Creek, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug test services. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in this field is unparalleled. With centers across all cities nationwide, you’re assured a location nearby ready to conduct the test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed, with hair analysis capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG or tailored testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle testing is becoming a more prevalent method compared to urine tests. Employers, legal courts, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair tests. They serve companies enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation monitoring. The hair test excels with a longer detection period, up to 90 days, and its resistant nature against tampering boosts credibility. Yet, for screening consumption less than 5 days ago, urine tests still remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the matrix of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers an approximately 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

Taking a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. Head hair specifically denotes scalp hair. Meanwhile, body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result is broken down into four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial step of integrating the sample into a laboratory's system. This step involves ensuring the sample's seal and shipping were done correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data that isn't available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial cursory examination for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient practice to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be considered valid in legal settings. Any samples tentatively testing positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample registers as tentatively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples returning presumptive positive results are cleansed as needed before confirmation. This comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to tamper with, thus ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Supply of historical data: This method can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just detecting immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A timeframe of approximately 5-7 days is needed before drugs become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle located beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
