If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (face, armpits, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory's database. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts a quick preliminary check for drugs of abuse. It's a cost-effective preliminary method to exclude drug presence in most samples, but a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial collection for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than with other tests (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as presumptive positives are washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is analyzed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
