Hope, Minnesota residents have access to full-service hair follicle drug testing through Accredited Drug Testing. Whether testing for drugs or alcohol, the company specializes in hair analysis with centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary for accurate results, which identify substances like ETG or other selected options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become the preferred choice for many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. These tests cater to zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and probation cases. The significant advantage is the extended detection window—up to 90 days—with an observed collection that prevents cheating. Nonetheless, urine tests still offer optimal accuracy for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair sample testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture biomarkers within the strands, offering a detailed account of alcohol and drug history over time. Collected near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month usage history for substances including alcohol. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A hair specimen of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimum quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is recommended to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is scarce, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair solely pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the preliminary processing of a specimen within a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening economically eliminates drug usage in most cases, a positive finding must be validated for judicial acceptance. Samples provisionally positive at Screening require further verification.

For specimens testing presumptively positive during Screening, an additional quantity of hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at far lesser concentrations than other tests (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmatory testing for any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is rigorously reviewed per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a narrower detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is particularly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage patterns: It offers insights into drug consumption trends over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal growth rate differences may influence metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", this analysis evaluates the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
