Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Pennington, Minnesota. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair testing, we operate testing centers throughout the nation, offering hair tests in all urban areas. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required for sampling. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair analysis options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly mainstream for substance detection. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse counselors now often opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine assessments. This method is favored by organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and for those on probation due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and difficulty in manipulation. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying substance use of drugs and alcohol. Hair maintains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug activity by embedding biomarkers in the elements of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the head, hair can reveal a detection window of around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and it is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the head yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample's weight on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. When specifying head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial sample processing into the lab’s system. This step verifies the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any presumptively positive samples during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging process to execute.

Positive screening results are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is analyzed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge in falsifying results: It is extremely hard to fake a hair drug test, improving the accuracy of findings.
  • Provides historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It generally takes around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug screening methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair samples.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Pennington, MN, provides superior benefits over traditional urine testing, particularly in detecting drug use. While urine tests excel at identifying recent drug use, hair testing offers a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance history by detecting drug use over an extended period.

The reliable detection accuracy of hair tests means fewer false positives and negatives, making it a preferred choice for employers enforcing a drug-free workplace. Its robustness ensures results are both precise and consistent.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Pennington, MN, can rely on hair follicle testing to deliver a far-reaching detection window of up to 90 days. This method provides a broader look at an individual's past substance use, making it a crucial tool in pre-employment screenings and ongoing monitoring to maintain a drug-free workplace.

With this extended detection ability, hair tests prove valuable for assessing patterns of substance use, offering a more detailed picture than traditional testing methods such as urine tests, which cover much shorter periods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The robust nature of hair follicle testing in Pennington, MN, significantly minimizes the risk of sample tampering. This testing method is admired for its tamper-resistant design, which ensures the integrity of the sample and the validity of the test results.

Unlike other testing methods, hair tests are difficult to manipulate, offering unquestionable reliability in results. Employers can thus have peace of mind knowing that the results accurately reflect the individual's substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
