Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Algoma, Mississippi. If hair or alcohol testing is required, our experts in hair analysis deliver testing at our nationwide centers. Generally, the crown of the head needs 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, or alternatively body hair might be used. Hair tests can help identify drugs, alcohol/ETG or other tailored hair analysis solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly turned towards hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors are opting for hair drug testing in place of the standard urine approach. This method is embraced by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation individuals. Its advantage is a broader detection window, capturing up to 90 days, through an observed and nearly tamper-proof process. Yet, for drug usage within the previous 5 days, urine tests remain unsurpassed in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for assessing drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, providing a comprehensive timeline of substance use. When hair is collected from the scalp area, it offers roughly a 3-month detection span for both alcohol and drugs. This method is straightforward in collection, challenging to tamper, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to hair from the scalp, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for processing a drug test result includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial steps of integrating a sample into a laboratory's system. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing information from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples that presumptively indicate a positive result during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging process to accomplish.

Any positive Screening result is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review based on the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a reduced detection duration.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are difficult to fake, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Shows usage history: Provides a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Choose Hair Follicle Testing Over Urine Testing in Algoma, MS:

The hair follicle test's ability to capture drug usage over a more extended period is a significant advantage over traditional urine tests. Its accuracy and reliability in detecting substance use make it superior, especially for organizations needing thorough assessments.

The combination of higher detection accuracy and reduced manipulation vulnerability sets hair testing apart from urine testing. Hair samples provide a clear, comprehensive report, as opposed to limited detection from urine tests.

  • Longer detection window
  • Less prone to tampering
  • Greater reliability

Extended Detection Window

Greater Detection Window in Algoma, MS: Hair follicle testing stands out with its capability to identify substance use over a span of up to 90 days. This extended view into a person's drug history benefits employers by offering insights that standard tests cannot.

Employers value the hair test's ability to provide a historical snapshot of an individual's substance use, ensuring a comprehensive review rather than a limited-time snapshot as seen with other methods.

  • Long-term history view
  • Enhanced employer insight
  • Up to 90 days detection

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Secure Testing Method in Algoma, MS: Hair follicle testing is recognized for its tamper-resistant nature. The test's design significantly minimizes the possibility of sample sabotage, resulting in trustworthy outcomes.

By focusing on the use of hair samples, these tests make adulteration substantially more difficult. This ensures that results can be relied upon without the concern of sample manipulation, providing peace of mind to those who depend on test accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
