Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Canaan, Mississippi. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with facilities in every city Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body hair is required. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

In recent times, the procedure for drug testing increasingly includes hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. A significant advantage of hair tests is their longer detection window, which is usually up to 90 days, involving an observed collection process that is nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still hold precedence for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and other drug use for nearly 3 months. Hair is easy to collect, moderately resistant to tampering, and straightforward to send off.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels above 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is advised. If there is no scalp hair available, a similar amount of body hair can be taken. By head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result comprises four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's database. This step includes confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further required data entry if not provided electronically.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for abused substances. While Screening is economical for negating drug use in most samples, a positive Screening requires confirmation for judicial acceptance. Presumptive positives identified during Screening necessitate a further confirmation step.

Should Screening yield a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternatives (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Postive screenings are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Prior to confirmation, all samples that tested presumptively positive are washed if required. The entire process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, undergoes thorough review in accordance with the CAP Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug testing can trace drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, yielding more reliable results.
  • Chronological data: It reveals a history of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Often mistaken as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
