Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Cary, Mississippi. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in this method, with testing facilities in all U.S. cities to carry out hair testing. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other substances.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for this test over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers use hair tests. The main advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, which is difficult to tamper with. However, for drug usage in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Over time, hair embeds biomarkers in its strands, offering a historical record of substance use. When extracted from the scalp, hair has a detection period of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. It's easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

Gathering a 1.5-inch snippet of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those over 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" references only scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab process for drug testing comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a specimen within a laboratory's system. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening is a rapid check for the presence of drugs. It is a cost-effective way to exclude drug use for most samples; however, positive screenings must be confirmed for court admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted and readied for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other substances like urine or saliva, making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is notably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical pattern recognition: It can chart a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs need about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can modify drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
