Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Crowder, Mississippi. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, our specialists are ready to assist with centers available Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are required. Various testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom options are available.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has gained traction against standard urine tests, used increasingly by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. It's favored by those upholding zero-tolerance policies due to its lengthy detection timeframe—up to 90 days—alleging collection is tamper-proof. However, urine remains the precise choice for recent usage, within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the developing hair fiber. When harvested near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil in diameter) collected closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in processing a drug test result at the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. It involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any missing data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome needs authentication for legal admissibility. Samples tentatively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging method to carry out.

Positive screening results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with tentative positive outcomes are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug assessments can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection time.
  • Challenging to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring higher accuracy in results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with urine testing in Crowder, MS, the former stands out due to its meticulous detection accuracy and reliability. Resistant to evasion tactics, hair tests provide a robust method for screening drug use. Their ability to highlight substance intake over an extensive period makes them a superior choice over traditional urine testing, delivering preferable precision.

Extended Detection Window

With a detection window extending up to 90 days in Crowder, MS, hair follicle testing provides a detailed overview of a person's substance use history. Employers gain comprehensive insights into prospective or current employees' drug usage habits. This prolonged detection period offers a significant advantage over shorter timeframe urine tests, making it ideal for stringent drug use policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
