Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug assessments in Estill, Mississippi. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair follicle examinations, with facilities available in every city nationwide to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair evaluations can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing solutions.

In recent times, the preference for conducting drug assessments has increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists now opt for hair drug evaluations instead of traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are employed by businesses with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals undergoing probationary periods. The chief advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, ensuring an observed collection procedure with minimal chances of tampering. Conversely, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged timeline of drugs and alcohol by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug use for up to 90 days. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional add-ons, and/or extensive panels beyond 10, it's advised to have 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for accuracy. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, the same quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas body hair includes facial, axillary, and other hair types.

Process Overview

The four principal steps in processing a drug test in a lab setting are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample enters the laboratory’s system, where verification of its proper sealing and shipment occurs, a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any additional data not captured electronically is entered.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug consumption in most cases, any positive indications require further confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that exhibit a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For those samples with a presumptive positive result from Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, aligns with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) accreditation for Hair and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests detect usage over shorter periods.
  • Challenging to tamper with: The integrity of hair drug tests is high, yielding more reliable results.
  • Shows historical drug use: It displays patterns of substance use over time instead of only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetected: Drugs typically become traceable in hair between 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
