Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Evansville, Mississippi. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing and boasts testing facilities across all cities nationwide capable of conducting hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body may be used. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing needs.

In recent years, drug testing practices have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug assessments are chosen by employers who enforce strict drug-free policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation. The primary advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection timeline for drug usage, which can reach up to 90 days, involves an observed collection procedure, and is extremely difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substance use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a three-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning engages the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This step includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entry not provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary brisk assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to discard drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positivity during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is undertaken through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleaned beforehand for confirmation as warranted. The comprehensive laboratory process spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can monitor drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests encompass a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can yield a timeline of drug consumption over time, not simply recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While customarily called "hair follicle tests", the examination evaluates the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Evansville, MS, surpasses traditional urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair samples provide a longer window for detecting substance use, capturing a comprehensive picture of an individual's drug history. This thorough approach allows employers to confidently enforce drug-free policies, ensuring a safe and compliant workplace environment.

Urine tests, while effective for recent use, do not match the precision of hair follicle testing in identifying prolonged substance involvement. Hair testing is less susceptible to tampering or manipulation, providing employers with a more trustworthy method of screening. This reliable approach assists Evansville organizations in maintaining integrity and accountability within their workforce.

Extended Detection Window

In Evansville, MS, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window for drug use, giving employers a detailed perspective on an individual's substance history. With the ability to trace drug use up to 90 days, hair tests provide a broader insight into patterns of abuse and help identify long-term users who pose potential risks in the workplace.

This wide detection range makes hair follicle testing a valuable tool in pre-employment screenings and ongoing employee evaluations. Employers gain a clear view of a candidate or employee's drug history, ensuring informed hiring and retention decisions. The comprehensive nature of hair tests plays a vital role in upholding safety and compliance in Evansville workplaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
