When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.
A hair sample of 1.5 inches containing around 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening involves a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Any samples that show a presumptive positive result during Screening require further confirmation.
If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method.
Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed, as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Limitations:
Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle below the scalp.
