Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fernwood, Mississippi. When a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing caters to this need with centers in every city Nationwide qualified to administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from your head or body to conduct these tests, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often favor a hair drug test to a urine test. Zero-tolerance employers, court systems, and probationary officers appreciate hair tests due to their extended detection window, up to 90 days, collected in a secure manner, and the difficulty in tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most effective for detecting recent drug usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longitudinal record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug use within roughly a 3-month period. Collection is straightforward, alteration is challenging, and transportation is convenient.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. In discussing head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step involves confirming that the sample is correctly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court admissible. Samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed prior to Confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter window.
  • Resistant to tampering: It is exceedingly difficult to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical use: It provides a timeline of drug habits, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
