Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Flora, Mississippi. Whether you're in need of hair drug or alcohol evaluations, we specialize in this area and have facilities across all major cities countrywide ready to administer the test. Typically, hair from the crown or body at least 1.5 to 2 inches long is required. Our hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a popular method for drug testing. Employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests instead of the standard urine test. These tests are favored by employers implementing zero-tolerance policies, the courts, and probationary scenarios. The key benefit lies in the extended detection span of drug use, which can be up to 90 days, acquired through an observed collection process, making it nearly tamper-proof. For detecting recent drug use, particularly within the preceding five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, less susceptible to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial receipt of a specimen into the lab system. This step involves confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial, rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be validated for legal acceptability. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo washing prior to validation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for a span of up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a briefer detection period.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle found under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests in Flora, MS, the advanced detection capabilities of hair testing stand out. Hair testing is not only more accurate but is also less susceptible to manipulation. The extended detection period and reliability offer enhanced security and assurance, making it a preferred choice over conventional urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing method in Flora, MS, reveals drug usage over an extensive timeframe, typically up to 90 days. This prolonged window allows employers to obtain a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance use history. Such depth of insight is crucial for maintaining safe and drug-free work environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
