Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hamilton, Mississippi. For hair or alcohol testing needs, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities available across every city Nationwide to conduct these tests. Ideally, hair samples require 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body. Our analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests over traditional ones. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair drug tests rather than typical urine analyses. This method benefits organizations with strict anti-drug policies and legal institutions due to its extended detection period, highlighting drug consumption up to 90 days, conducted under supervision and challenging to alter. However, urine tests prove more accurate for detecting recent use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can present up to roughly a 3-month monitoring period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hairs (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for preliminary testing and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested to measure the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair might be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in the lab processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary handling of a sample within a lab system. This process verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug substances. While Screening is an affordable means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal admissibility. Every sample showing positive indications in Screening requires secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing poses unique challenges.

Verification of any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as required. The whole lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair initiative and the accreditation in ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a narrower detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly unlikely, enhancing result precision.
  • Shows usage patterns: It provides insights into drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Doesn’t detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
