At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide thorough hair follicle drug screenings in Ingomar, Mississippi. If a drug or alcohol hair test is needed, our expertise in hair testing is available nationwide, with facilities in every city capable of conducting a hair test. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically required. Hair screening can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various needs.

Recently, the approach to drug testing more commonly includes a hair follicle drug examination. Hair tests are preferred by many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over conventional urine tests. Zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and those on probation often rely on hair follicle tests. The key advantage of these tests is an extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, conducted in an observed manner, making it extremely hard to tamper with. However, for drug use detection within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-lasting record of alcohol and substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment from around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale for measurement is advisable. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The main stages in laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of processing a sample into the lab's system. It ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data input absent in an electronic custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift check for drug presence. Although Screening is cost-efficient for negating drug consumption in most cases, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that test positive preliminarily during Screening must undergo a follow-up verification.

If the Screening phase indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction preparation. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of positive screens is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples exhibiting presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests present minimal opportunities for cheating, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage patterns: They can depict drug consumption trends over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to discern recent use: Detection in hair requires about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the actual hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
