Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in Kearney Park, Mississippi. For those needing hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this field, with testing facilities across all cities nationwide. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the crown or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts often favor hair testing over customary urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, the legal system, and probation officers. Its unique advantage lies in detecting drug use for up to 90 days, through an observed process, making cheating highly improbable. Yet, urine tests remain most effective for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is taken from near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We recommend utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, the same quantity of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the introductory processing of a sample within a lab’s system. Tasks here consist of verifying that the sample is sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, confirmed results are mandatory for legal acceptance. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In instances of a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at far lesser concentrations than in other procedures (like urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests exhibit a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Complication in deception: Cheating in a hair drug test is incredibly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Restrictions:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become noticeable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
