Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lexie, Mississippi. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is supported by test centers throughout the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is required for testing. Substances like drugs and alcohol can be evaluated, as well as other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, there has been a notable shift towards using hair follicle drug tests for substance detection. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse specialists are favoring this method over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary services have adopted this method. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period, providing insight into drug use over approximately 90 days, with strict observation during sample collection, making tampering almost impossible. Conversely, urine tests remain highly accurate for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting the use of substances like drugs and alcohol. Hair provides an extended timeline of substance history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection time frame for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, offers 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG add-ons and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be accessed, the same amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is an economical approach to discount drug use in most cases; however, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary verification.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this process, drugs are removed from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging approach to conduct.

Any positive result must be confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample is rinsed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides use history: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent activity: Drugs are detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are generally costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
