In Louisville, Mississippi, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. If you're in need of testing for drugs or alcohol, our centers, available nationwide, provide specialized hair tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from either the crown of your head or body is needed. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific requirements.

In recent times, drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle tests over traditional methods. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair testing instead of urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies, probation requirements, or court-mandated screenings benefit greatly. The main advantage is the extended detection period lasting up to 90 days, alongside the secure, observed testing process which is hard to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term patterns of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers during growth. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and substances. Its collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, adequate for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. “Head hair” specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas “Body hair” covers other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test outcomes encompasses four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This step encompasses validating the proper sealing and transit of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening economically eliminates most negative results, a confirmed positive is obligatory for legal admissibility. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening demand further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted at considerably lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, hence making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any presumed positive result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a narrower detection timeframe.
  • High difficulty to tamper: Trying to cheat a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Establishes historical patterns: It can trace a timeline of drug use, extending beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair readings.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the scalp-located hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Louisville, MS, when it comes to comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests, the hair method stands out. With its superior detection accuracy, hair testing gives a more reliable view of an individual's substance use history. While urine tests are still used, especially for recent use detection, the thorough nature of hair testing often proves more beneficial for extended monitoring.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Louisville, MS, provides a remarkable advantage with an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This capability offers employers insight into an individual’s substance use over a longer period, providing a comprehensive view that helps make informed decisions regarding current or potential employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
