Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Lynchburg, Mississippi. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available in every city across the nation equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head's crown or body is suitable. Hair testing can involve drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various tailored testing options.

Recently, there's been a shift towards using hair follicle drug tests more frequently. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and probation-related contexts often choose hair follicle tests. The main advantage is the longer detection period, extending to about 90 days, collected under observation, making it very difficult to alter the test. However, for drug use screening in the most recent 5-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use up to a 3-month timeframe. The procedure of collecting hair is easy, tampering is challenging, and shipping is straightforward.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches that includes approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield roughly 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it’s advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an acceptable substitute. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four crucial steps in the laboratory's handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the sample’s initial introduction into the lab’s workflow. This involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry needs not met by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening entails a swift preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While this step is a cost-saving measure to disqualify drug use for most samples, any positive screening outcome must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that are initially positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

For samples testing positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is selected from the primary specimen to be used in Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration from hair compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening a more challenging procedure.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples identified as presumptively positive undergo a cleansing step before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Compared to urine tests, hair drug tests can identify drug usage for a period reaching 90 days.
  • Difficulty of deception: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly more challenging, hence enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides historical trends: It traces a usage pattern over time rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Individual factors such as hair color and growth rate can influence the drug metabolites' concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," this procedure actually examines the hair strand itself rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Lynchburg, MS, outperforms traditional urine tests by offering superior detection and reliability. The hair test's ability to identify a longer history of drug use compared to urine tests gives employers and other stakeholders a clearer picture of an individual's substance consumption behaviors. The expansive detection window, stretching up to 90 days, is a significant advantage.

Traditional urine tests often face challenges in accuracy due to shorter detection periods and potential adulteration. In contrast, hair follicle testing prevents these issues, providing results that are both accurate and resistant to tampering. This reliability strengthens trust in the information obtained through hair testing.

Extended Detection Window

In Lynchburg, MS, one of the key advantages of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. Unlike other methods, hair tests can reveal substance use over a span of up to 90 days, offering a more thorough examination of an individual's drug history. This feature is particularly beneficial for employers desiring a detailed overview of a job candidate's or employee's past substance use patterns.

The longer detection window helps organizations understand potential risks through a broad lens, ensuring strategic decision-making related to hiring and workforce management. This contributes to creating healthier workplace environments and maintaining company reputation.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug testing in Lynchburg, MS, significantly mitigates the risk of sample tampering. The method's robust structure makes adulteration a complex challenge, ensuring results remain trustworthy and unaltered. The process of collecting and analyzing hair samples is designed to prevent any form of manipulation that might affect the outcome.

Compared to urine tests, hair tests provide an additional layer of security, bolstering confidence in the results obtained. This reduction in tamper-ability ensures that decisions based on drug testing are made with solid, reliable data, enhancing overall results integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
