Located in Penton, Mississippi, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require assessment for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing at numerous centers nationwide. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for analysis. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

More recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method in drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Specifically, employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation cases benefit from this method. Hair follicle tests boast a 90-day detection period, involve a witnessed collection, and are tough to manipulate. For instances of drug use within five days, urine tests still offer the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term evidence of alcohol and other drugs by encasing biomarkers within its strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases included in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial quick analysis for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means of excluding drug usage on most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be considered valid in court. Any samples suspected to be positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is suspected to be positive in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to circumvent: It's exceedingly tough to evade a hair drug test, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug usage over a duration, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
