Certified Drug Screening offers extensive hair follicle drug panels in Phoenix, Mississippi. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we excel in hair sample testing, and operate test centers across every city Nationwide capable of conducting hair analysis. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is adequate. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made hair testing solutions.

Lately, drug screening methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judicial authorities, and Substance Abuse experts are mandating hair drug tests instead of traditional urine screenings. Hair follicle drug analysis is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is the extended detection window for drug usage, generally up to 90 days, collected through monitored procedures, and being nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for detecting substance use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair's natural ability to encapsulate biomarkers within its growing strands offers a prolonged record of drug and alcohol use. Hair samples taken near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol consumption patterns over roughly a three-month period. It's easy to collect, tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests with more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is entered into the laboratory's framework. This verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumed positive samples from Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If Screening identifies a sample as presumptively positive, additional hair is sourced from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This process involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS is used to confirm any positive results from screening. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection span.
  • Enhanced accuracy: It is nearly impossible to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring greater result reliability.
  • Long-term usage patterns: The test provides insights into drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Phoenix, MS, hair follicle testing offers substantial advantages over traditional urine tests. Its superior detection accuracy provides a clearer picture of substance use over a longer period than urine tests.

Employers in Phoenix, MS opt for hair testing due to its high reliability, detecting drug use with greater precision, thus ensuring workplace safety and reducing the chances of false negatives that are often a concern with urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Phoenix, MS offers an extended detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days prior. This capability provides employers with a comprehensive assessment of an individual's substance history.

Unlike other methods, hair tests reveal drug patterns over months, offering deeper insight into habitual use, thus benefiting employers in making informed hiring and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Phoenix, MS significantly mitigates the risk of tampering, ensuring trustworthy results. This method minimizes sample adulteration, which is a common concern with other types of drug tests.

With hair tests, Phoenix employers can rely on the integrity and accuracy of the results, as it's nearly impossible for individuals to alter or obscure their drug use history when evaluated by this method.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
