Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair drug testing solutions in Ruth, Mississippi. Whenever a hair-based drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialist. We offer nationwide testing facilities, including centers in every city where hair analysis can be conducted. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular method in drug screening. It's now preferred by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and parolees, rely on hair tests for their extended detection windows—often up to 90 days. The collection occurs under supervised conditions, making it virtually tamper-proof. However, for recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain superior in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeline of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG analyses, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's preferable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair pertain specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The processing of a drug testing result in a laboratory is divided into four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the initial processing of a sample into the laboratory's system is conducted. This process involves verifying the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that might not be covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid test for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug use for the majority of samples, a positive result must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening need further confirmation.

For cases where a sample tests presumptive positive during the Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging to perform.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation. The full lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for three months, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's extremely challenging to outsmart a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
