Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug testing services in Shannon, Mississippi. If you need a test for drugs or alcohol using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with facilities located across all cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for conducting drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often require a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and probation officers. A key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period, observing drug use up to 90 days and collected under observation, making it almost impossible to falsify. Although for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, a urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol usage. Hair can capture a prolonged record of alcohol and substance use by storing biomarkers within the growing hair strand. By collecting hair close to the scalp, it can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to approximately 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch piece comprising roughly 200 hair strands, similar in size to a #2 pencil and located closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for assessment and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, additional analysis, or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We recommend the use of a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair cannot be acquired, an equivalent portion of body hair may be taken. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in processing a lab-based drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a specimen within a lab's framework. This step includes ensuring that the specimen was sealed and dispatched correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any supplemental data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary analysis for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that yield a presumed positive result during Screening must undergo additional corroboration.

When a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests one of the toughest methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is verified under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is extremely difficult to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It can provide a timeline of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
