Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Terry, Mississippi. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations, with facilities nationwide equipped to perform them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is needed, or body hair can be used. Hair exams offer options for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other thematic tests.

Recently, drug testing frequently incorporates hair follicle tests. Various employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair evaluations over the standard urine method. Hair follicle screenings benefit organizations with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and individuals on legal supervision. Key advantages include a longer detection span of up to 90 days and a collection that's hard to manipulate. Nevertheless, for recent drug detection, within five days, urine tests are the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has evolved into a significant technique for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record for alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the structure of the developing hair strands. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal up to approximately a 3-month timeframe for identifying alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for assessment and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome, four primary phases are pivotal: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into the laboratory’s framework. This phase includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the preliminary rapid assessment for potential drug abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates further verification to be upheld in legal settings. Samples that are assumed positive during Screening must undergo an additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to carry out.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed to be positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests suffice with a shorter duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more authentic outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It delivers a pattern of substance usage over time, not only immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly compared to other drug-testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Terry, MS, hair follicle tests surpass urine tests by offering extended detection and greater reliability. Unlike traditional urine methods, hair tests effectively reveal a longer history of substance use, providing a comprehensive view. Superior accuracy ensures employers and legal professionals have confidence in the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
