Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Richland, Mississippi. If you seek a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise is in hair-based testing, with facilities available in various cities across the nation to conduct these tests. The typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or another body part. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

In recent times, drug screening techniques have increasingly adopted the hair follicle drug test method. Employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse specialists lean towards hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers favor hair follicle testing. Its main advantage is the extended detection timeframe, generally up to 90 days, with direct observation during collection, making it highly secure. However, for detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-lasting record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, suitable for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab's system. This covers verifying seal integrity, proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary drug abuse check. While Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug utilization in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex technique to perform.

Confirming any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair tests are challenging to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical data: Reveals drug use patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors such as hair color and individual growth can affect metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Richland, MS
In a comparison between hair follicle and traditional urine tests, the former boasts greater detection accuracy and reliability. Not only does hair testing encompass a longer detection window, but it also provides a clearer insight into historical substance use patterns, ensuring employers and legal entities get the full picture.

The longer detection windows and superior accuracy make hair follicle testing a preferred choice over conventional urine tests in ensuring a drug-free environment. Unlike urine tests which are limited in their retrospective analysis, hair testing captures a broader sequence of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Richland, MS
Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, enabling a comprehensive assessment of an individual's drug use history. This long view is invaluable for employers who need a full picture of employee habits, allowing informed decisions based on accurate data.

The ability to detect substances over such an extended period surpasses other testing methods. It equips employers with detailed insights, ensuring workplace safety and integrity by looking at a broader timeline of potential substance abuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
