Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Thompson, Mississippi. If you require hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers nationwide ready to assist. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests are versatile, assessing drugs, ETG/alcohol, and other tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent times. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers find hair tests valuable. The key advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring minimal chances of tampering. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline for detecting alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. If collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month history of alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch length comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately matching the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and validation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair might be used. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair only, while body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome is composed of four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. It encompasses verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift examination for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible in legal settings. Any samples that return a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is notably challenging to administer.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug use extending up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Hair drug tests are resistant to tampering, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data provision: It can offer a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not merely recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Lack of early detection: Drugs become evident in hair approximately 5-7 days following usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs greater costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
