Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Tunica, Mississippi. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unrivaled, with centers nationwide ready to carry out such tests. Ideally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts, which can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified hair analysis options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists often prefer a hair drug test over a urine test due to its effectiveness. It's favored by those with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those overseeing individuals on probation. The advantage of this test is its extended detection span of up to 90 days, enforced through supervised collections, making it almost foolproof. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a highly effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures long-lasting evidence of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioned as head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily consists of four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry that an electronic chain of custody system did not provide.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screening result must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Any presumptive positive samples detected during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample results as presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is obtained from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methodologies (i.e., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are subjected to a wash before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to manipulate the results of a hair drug test, which enhances accuracy.
  • Provides a usage timeline: It offers an overview of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
