Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Union, Mississippi. For those in need of hair or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific hair testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening processes. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are suited for employers enforcing drug-free policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, and difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for determining drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand, hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating a #2 pencil's size) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial registration of a sample into a lab’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any ancillary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective means to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Samples that appear positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle situated under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Union, MS, offers superior detection when compared to traditional urine tests. The benefits of choosing hair testing are evident in its enhanced accuracy and reliability. Hair tests cover a more extended period, capturing a comprehensive history of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
