Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Decatur, Mississippi. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with testing facilities across all cities Nationwide to conduct a hair test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Hair tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other unique testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been used as a method for drug testing. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and people on probation. The main advantage is the prolonged detection period of up to 90 days, collected with supervision, making it nearly tamper-proof. Despite this, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substance usage by securing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, it offers roughly a three-month timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair can be easily collected, is challenging to tamper with, and is straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair segment comprising around 200 strands (the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into the laboratory's process, involving verification that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, the generation of a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any additional data processing not addressed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial assessment for the presence of drugs. Though cost-effective for ruling out usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed before being court-admissible. Samples that test positive in Screening require a supplementary confirmation.

In instances where Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction phase. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation when necessary. The complete procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen in compliance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, whereas the detection window for urine tests is shorter.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Tampering with a hair test is notably difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It illustrates a pattern of drug consumption over time rather than indicating only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally bear a higher cost compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the process examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
