Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Weir, Mississippi. If your requirement is for a hair drug or alcohol test, look no further. Specializing in hair testing, our centers across the nation efficiently conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. We analyze hair for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods now often include hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer these over typical urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation now favor hair follicle tests. The main advantage is the extended detection period, often up to 90 days, due to observed sample collections, making tampering exceedingly difficult. Nevertheless, for drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair provides a comprehensive long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When hair is taken close to the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol consumption over roughly a three-month period. Hair samples are straightforward to collect, harder to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield about 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise specimen weight. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can suffice. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively; body hair encompasses all other hair types such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for drug abuse. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a confirmed result is necessary for legal admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positives require additional confirmation.

For presumptive positives identified in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at much lower levels in this stage compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, illustrating why hair drug screening is challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo necessary washes before confirmation. The complete laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use for as many as 90 days, surpassing the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Cheating prevention: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks historical usage: Hair analysis can map drug use trends across an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings tend to cost more than other drug testing strategies.
  • Result inconsistency: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
