Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Wesson, Mississippi. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with centers in cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair screenings. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair analysis is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing methods.

Over recent years, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests for drug detection has grown. Many employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug screenings are employed by employers with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probationers. The primary advantage is its extended drug use detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for drugs used within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has grown in recognition as an effective mechanism to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-standing record of alcohol and drug usage by entrapping markers within the expanding hair shaft fibers. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's advised to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, equivalent body hair can be used. References to head hair specify scalp hair exclusively. Body hair relates to all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in the laboratory processing for a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial integration into a lab's system. This includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial, swift assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples tentatively positive during Screening require secondary verification.

For samples tentatively positive in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is challenging.

The confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with tentative positives are washed prior to necessary confirmation. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely hard, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historic data provision: It displays a drug usage pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post use.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
