At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Winstonville, Mississippi. If a hair or alcohol test is what you require, our expertise in hair testing, complemented by our nationwide network of testing centers, ensures you get the service you need. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other personalized hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of the standard drug testing protocol. Employers, judges, and substance abuse professionals are turning to hair drug testing over traditional urine methods. This test is ideal for organizations with zero-drug tolerance policies and is invaluable for probationary assessments. A hair follicle test can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it extremely difficult to falsify the results. For accurate screening of recent drug use, within the last five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of a hair strand capture biological markers that offer a prolonged timeline of substance use. Collected near the scalp, hair can indicate substance use within an approximate three-month frame for alcohol and other drugs. Hair samples are easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair segment consisting of about 200 strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for testing and confirming. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing into the lab's system. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples that test positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial specimen is prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive result from screening uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair testing can uncover substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Yields historical insight: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: It typically takes 5-7 days before drugs can be detected in hair.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Aspects including hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand, not the follicle lying beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Superiority of Hair Testing over urine tests in Winstonville, MS, is evident. Unlike urine tests, hair testing offers reliable and accurate detection, showcasing efficiency.

The benefits of hair testing over traditional urine tests lie in its ability to track long-term drug usage, giving it an edge in reliability and accuracy.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection is where hair follicle tests shine in Winstonville, MS. They offer a longer look-back period, often up to 90 days, capturing a broader scope of substance history.

Employers benefit from hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period, providing insight into drug use well beyond the limitations of blood or urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
