In Chain of Rocks, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of body or head hair is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent in drug testing procedures. More employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists favor hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are chosen by employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and for those on probation. Hair follicle drug tests offer a longer detection timeframe of up to 90 days through an observed collection process, making them highly reliable and difficult to deceive. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the best.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 90-day detection period for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, optimal for examination and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves checking that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for commonly abused drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective means of ruling out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples that are provisionally positive in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the collected specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at concentrations lower than those used in other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Any positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can detect drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to tamper with, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It supplies a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically more costly than other drug analysis methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
